Creating Queer Solo Performance was a six day learning experience at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, led by renowned practitioner, movement director, and researcher of queer theory and performance, Nando Messias.
The project gave me the experience to study and experiment alongside multi-disciplinary queer artists from around the country.
The focus of the course was on the theory and process of devising new work. Involving experimentation, ‘critical friends’ feedback, looking at structure, and unraveling queerness by considering this not just in content but form. The week concluded in our individual works being sewn together to create a group piece, performed for an invited audience.
I found that during and after this experience, my confidence improved, along with my sense of experimentation. I discovered new ways of making work and developing ideas by opening up my thinking and met some incredible creative peers. The education received and time spent with Nando was invaluable for myself and my practice.
